To get your bearings, make the short trip up Tucson's Sentinel Peak, also called "A" Mountain. Historically, this westside peak has been a lookout. Today, you can use Sentinel Peak to see Tucson.
The Santa Catalina Mountains are on the north and northeast; the Rincon Mountains are to the east; the Santa Rita Mountains flank the south and southeast; the Tucson Mountains are on the west; and the Tortolita Mountains close the ring on the northwest.
Tucson has three major rivers or washes: The Santa Cruz River, the Rillito and the Pantano Wash. These are usually dry until the summer rainy season, when they can fill up in a matter of minutes.
Tucson is 2,389 feet above sea level, and the metropolitan area covers nearly 500 square miles. Tucson is the seat of government for Pima County, one of Arizona's four original counties.
